“No one has ever asked us what WE dream of”

Through The Dream Project, women like Worrod are being supported to fulfil the career dreams they have been denied due to war and gender oppression.

“I married way too young and was deprived of an education, my husband left me with small children and no one to rely on. Then the war started in Syria and I had to flee with nothing. We have gone through very difficult days; we had days we couldn’t eat. I managed to find a temporary job as an assistant in a school. That made me feel human and opened my eyes to the importance of being independent.

I always dreamt of being a professional hairdresser and a make up artist. I have always helped all the women in my neighbourhood with free hairdressing and make up. I love making women look their best. Makani helped me enrol in a course with an accredited certificate that will allow me to get a job in a salon. I will hopefully open my own salon in the future.

The best thing about this project is that we are asked about our dreams and our needs. No one has ever asked us what WE dream of.  The most important thing ever is that women should either be educated or have vocational training. ”
