Stand Up Comedy Workshops

Through the Summer and Autumn of 2023, Makani ran a series of eight stand-up comedy workshops in collaboration with Counterpoints Arts’ programme ‘No Direction Home’. These workshops brought ten refugee and asylum-seeking women together to learn the fundamentals of stand-up comedy in a non-intimidating and supportive environment, led by comedian Yasmeen Ghrawi.

These sessions culminated in two workshops at the famous Choose Love Shop, where members of the public were invited to learn from our fearless and funny participants, and live performances at Migrant Connections Festival, where they took to the stage.

Lastly, participants will bring their new-found comedy skills to our theatre project ‘The Women’s Strike: A Refugee Lysistrata’, coming to a London stage this summer.
