Combatting ‘honour’ killing through drama workshops
In 2019, we ran a theatre workshop with 12 internally displaced Syrian women to address so-called ‘honour killing’ - the brutal act of murder committed by a relative who believes the victim has brought the family shame or dishonour. This ‘honour’ code is part of a larger social system that subjugates women to men.
The women wrote a script which they performed on stage to a public audience of over a hundred attendees, demonstrating exceptional courage by performing in a regime-controlled area where freedom of expression has been stifled for decades.
