Background to Makani:

Makani is a charity working with Syrian and Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon, founded in 2021 and registered in the UK. To date we have done long-term women’s rights, income generation and arts therapy work with women living mostly in Sabra and Shatila and the south of Beirut. In particular we run a project called Oshana, which gives women a dignified income, a supportive community, and creative outlets for trauma through embroidery and crochet, which they make and we sell in the UK on their behalf. We also run other projects supporting refugee women, including theatre and craft therapy, and parenting support.

Makani also works with refugee women in the UK, but this is a Lebanon role.

Background to the role:

We are providing emergency support in the current crisis to the 100 women and their families that we support in Beirut (nearly all of whom have had to flee their homes), and to quickly support a further 100 families in the same way. We are aiming to provide cash grants as the swiftest, safest and most effective way to help people in the midst of the crisis.

We are also looking to understand the needs locally and see how best we can support longer term, if possible. This may well involve working in partnership with others.

Longer-term, we are looking for someone with experience of working in development or therapeutic programmes with displaced women to provide support to our programme, including project management, monitoring and evaluation, support with writing fundraising applications and reporting. Being approachable and sensitive to our community is key.

We have a very small team in Beirut, all of whom are Syrian refugee women from the community that we support. 

Job description

  • Needs assessment: understand the need and challenges among our community and other affected communities, and provide suggested interventions to support them.

  • Manage cash transfers.

  • Manage any other crisis interventions we undertake, for example working with partners to provide shelter, or providing psychosocial support to women.

  • Support with fundraising and communications by providing situation reports, need and impact stories for use with donors in the UK.

  • Other tasks as necessary.

  • There is potential for this to become a longer-term position both managing the crisis response and working on Makani’s long-term programme. This will involve project management, monitoring and evaluation, support with writing fundraising applications and reporting.

Person specification

  • Experience in NGO/ humanitarian crisis management

  • Approachable and sensitive to the needs of refugee women

  • Fluent Arabic essential

  • English highly desirable

كما نسعى إلى فهم الاحتياجات محليًا وكيفية دعم النساء المتضررات على المدى الطويل.  

لدينا فريق صغير جدًا في بيروت، جميع أعضائه من النساء اللاجئات السوريات المنتميات إلى المجتمع الذي ندعمه.

•⁠  ⁠إدارة أي تدخلات أخرى للأزمة نقوم بها، مثل العمل مع الشركاء لتوفير المأوى، أو تقديم الدعم النفسي والاجتماعي للنساء.  

•⁠  ⁠دعم جمع التبرعات والاتصالات من خلال تقديم تقارير حول الوضع، وقصص عن الاحتياجات والتأثير لاستخدامها مع المانحين في المملكة المتحدة.  

•⁠  ⁠مهام أخرى حسب الحاجة.

هناك إمكانية لأن يصبح هذا الدور طويل الأمد لإدارة الاستجابة للأزمة والعمل في برامج منظمة مكاني المتعددة.  

*المواصفات الشخصية*:  

•⁠  ⁠خبرة في إدارة الأزمات في المنظمات غير الحكومية / الإنسانية.  

•⁠  ⁠إجادة اللغة العربية أمر أساسي.
